Not sure if anyone has heard or not but rumor has it Sony is to start making records again three decades after it abandoned vinyl production. A factory south-west of Tokyo will churn out freshly pressed records from March, Sony Music Entertainment said on Thursday.
Back in 1989, the Japanese company had stopped the production of vinyl records as for those consumers had made the switch over to CDs and other emerging technology. According to the country’s recording industry association, Japan had made about 200m a year during the mid seventies.
Sony did not say which music would be released in record format. Global vinyl revenue will top $1bn this year while sales of CDs and digital downloads continue to fall. There is still no date as of when this will all take off with the vinyl production, but best not through away that record player as for it is coming back!
In way I am excited for this to happen as to I might need to go listen to my grandmas record player and listen to some old hits! Please comment and let me know what you think about vinyl records trying to make a comeback.
